The Caminito del Rey is nestled in the heart of the magnificent landscapes of Andalusia, in the province of Malaga, about an hour and a half's drive from Seville. It crosses the spectacular Gaitanes Gorges, a canyon carved by the Guadalhorce river, with limestone cliffs that reach 400 meters high in places.

Far from being a tourist attraction in its early stages, the path was built between 1901 and 1905. Its primary function was purely utilitarian: to connect two hydroelectric power stations, allowing workers to transport equipment and perform maintenance. It was a vital service road, not initially designed for public use.

A royal heritage showcased

It was in 1921 that the path gained its prestige and legendary name. King Alfonso XIII went there for the inauguration of the Count of Guadalhorce dam. He then took this little path, thus christening it for eternity: "El Caminito del Rey" (the little path of the King).

However, after decades of neglect, the structure deteriorated significantly. The concrete crumbled, the railings disappeared, and the planks left gaping holes overlooking the void. It was at this time that it gained its sinister reputation as the most dangerous trail in the world. Following numerous fatal accidents, it was closed in the early 2000s.

Fortunately, a massive renovation project was launched in 2014-2015. Today, a new, perfectly safe wooden walkway is securely anchored to the rock, just above the old, ruined footbridge. It is now accessible to all those who aren't afraid of heights.

We tested the Caminito del Rey in Andalusia

The journey begins with a simple tunnel carved into the rock in the northern part of the site. After this approach walk, we arrive at the checkpoint. It's there that we receive the essential equipment: a safety helmet. It's not so much there to protect against falls (the path is wide) as to prevent potential rockfalls. Putting on the helmet instantly transformed the atmosphere: it signaled that we were switching from "hiking" mode to "adventure" mode.

The adventure begins here

We opted for a guided tour as our adventure. We followed a guide who frequently stopped to explain the intricacies of the site. For example, he took the time to explain the crucial role of the railway that runs below, and also to describe the unique flora and fauna of the gorge (especially the birds of prey). This hour of walking and explanations set the scene and heightened our anticipation.

Walking on these wooden planks, securely fixed to the cliff face some one hundred meters above, gives a feeling of weightlessness and controlled vulnerability. The sound of the wind rushes through the canyon, mingling with the distant murmur of the river below. At each turn, the panorama opens onto vertiginous rock faces, sculpted by millennia of erosion. One feels tiny in the face of nature's immensity and the courage of the first workers who built this path.

The highlights of the journey

• The glass balcony : are you afraid of heights? Good luck! Integrated into the wall, a small section of the floor is made of transparent glass. Looking straight down gave us the impression of being suspended by a thread. Wonder quickly took over.
• Wildlife viewing : Look up and you'll see several griffon vultures soaring effortlessly above the cliffs. This is an incredible nature reserve, and feeling so close to them is a rare privilege.
• The suspension bridge (Puente Colgante) : the highlight of the trip is at the very end. This bridge, which spans both sides of the canyon, is truly impressive. It sways slightly underfoot, and the wind rushes through it, making the crossing quite a surprise. It's the perfect moment to capture your courage!

After about 3 hours of walking, including photo stops and admiration, we walk to reach El Chorro station (end of the route).

The golden rule: book your activity

The Caminito del Rey is a victim of its own success, even though it is highly regulated. Reservations are MANDATORY and must be made several weeks in advance, especially if you are traveling during peak season (spring or summer).

You can do it through the official website. It's the cheapest option, but tickets sell out very quickly. If you're staying in Seville, many agencies offer transport + ticket packages. This costs more, but guarantees your seat and simplifies the logistics.

How to get to Caminito del Rey from Seville?

Several options are available to you.

• The train is convenient. Take a train from Seville - Santa Justa to El Chorro-Caminito del Rey station. Note that this will drop you off at the arrival point. You will then need to take the shuttle to get to the starting point (North).
• By car, you'll have more flexibility, but this requires managing the shuttle. Ideally, park at the arrival point (El Chorro) and then take the shuttle bus to the departure point (North — Ardales) before your scheduled time.
• For an organized tour from Seville, allow 2 hours for the journey to the site. The major advantage is being taken directly to the starting point and picked up upon arrival, without any additional walking beyond the initial route.

The itinerary of the excursion

• The trail is generally one-way, from north (Ardales) to south (El Chorro).
• Allow approximately 3 to 4 hours in total (1 hour approach walk, 2 to 3 hours on the footbridge, then the exit).
• The difficulty is easy to moderate. It's a long walk, but without major technical elevation changes, as the trail is flat and safe.
• The trail is prohibited for children under 8 years old.
• Hiking poles, large backpacks, and camera tripods are prohibited on the footbridge. Remember to secure your phone or camera, as any fall is permanent! This applies to you as well as your belongings.
