About

  • English
    • The Costurero de la Reina is a small and charming building in Seville, recognizable by its romantic silhouette of a miniature castle. Located at the entrance to the Parque María Luisa, on the corner of the Paseo de las Delicias, it is distinguished by its picturesque neo-Mudejar style. It was the first building of its kind constructed in Seville, anticipating the style that would dominate the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Built in 1893 by the architect Juan Talavera y de la Vega, it was originally the guardhouse or garden pavilion of the adjacent Palacio de San Telmo.

The building owes its poetic name to a popular Sevillian legend, which tells of Queen María de las Mercedes of Orléans spending her time sewing (coser) there while waiting for the visit of her husband, King Alfonso XII, who came on horseback from the Alcázar. However, this story is a romantic myth: the building was constructed in 1893, fifteen years after the tragic death of the young queen, who died of typhus at the age of 18 in 1878.
