Directions Macarena Gate - Between ramparts and Sevillian fervor

About

  • English
    • The Macarena Gate is one of the few remaining remains of Seville's ancient fortified walls. Located north of the historic center, it was originally one of the main gates of the city walls built by the Almohads in the 12th century.

Often called the Arch of the Macarena, the gate was rebuilt in the 18th century, giving it its current classical appearance. It is particularly famous for its proximity to the Basilica of the Macarena, from where the procession of the Virgin of Hope Macarena, one of the most emblematic figures of Holy Week in Seville, departs. The Macarena Gate is a monument of Cultural Interest, and a testimony to the medieval and modern history of the city.
