The monument is ideally located in the Murillo Gardens, a green space that runs along the walls of the Alcázar and faces the Santa Cruz district.
Inaugurated in 1921, this monument is a work of the architect Rodrigo Peñalver and the sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera. It consists of two tall columns on which rests a stylized ship, symbolizing Columbus's caravel , the whole being supported by lions and surrounded by reliefs and allegorical figures that celebrate the discoverer of America and the city of Seville.
