Directions Rosina's Balcony - Window on old Seville

About

  • English
    • Rosina's Balcony is one of the most romantic and famous places in Seville, not so much for its architecture as for its powerful literary evocation. It is central to the plot of Gioachino Rossini's famous opera, The Barber of Seville (1816), itself adapted from the play by Beaumarchais.

Located in the historic district of Santa Cruz, this balcony is near the Plaza de Alfaro and the Murillo Garden. It symbolizes the seclusion of the young and lively Rosina, ward of Doctor Bartolo who wants to marry her. It is under this window that Count Almaviva, disguised as a poor student named "Lindoro", sings his love serenades, advised by the ingenious barber Figaro.

It is from this balcony that Rosina, in a famous scene from the first act, manages to drop a love letter for her suitor. It represents the boundary between confinement and the outside world, the place where budding desire and love challenge the authority of the old guardian. It is the icon of opera buffa (comic) and, even today, invites visitors to imagine the passionate duets and joyful plots that took place there.
