Directions Murillo Gardens - The calm near Santa Cruz

About

  • English
    • The Murillo Gardens are a beautiful green space in the heart of Seville, running along the walls of the Alcázar and marking the entrance to the historic Santa Cruz neighborhood. They take their name from the famous Sevillian painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.

This place has not always been a public garden. In 1911, it was the result of a royal donation, transforming the old vegetable garden of the Alcázar (Huerta del Retiro del Alcázar) into this place for walking. Designed by the architect Juan Talavera y Heredia, the gardens present a typical Sevillian style with their crisscrossing paths, fountains and benches in colorful azulejos. The vegetation is dense and shady, with a rich collection of palm trees, oleanders and impressive fig trees. Among the remarkable features not to be missed is the imposing Monument to Christopher Columbus, erected in 1921, in the Plaza de Alforo, where the Balcón de Rosina is also located. This legendary balcony is the window from which, according to popular legend, the heroine of Rossini's famous opera, The Barber of Seville, listened to her lover's serenades.
