About

  • English
    • The Royal Tobacco Factory (Real Fábrica de Tabacos) in Seville is an iconic building that was the first tobacco factory in Europe. It remains the largest industrial building in Spain after the Escorial Palace in Madrid. This historic site is world famous for having served as the setting for the story of Carmen, the cigar maker immortalized in the novella by Prosper Mérimée and the opera by Georges Bizet.

After ceasing its manufacturing activity in 1950, the Renaissance and Baroque building was renovated and today houses the headquarters of the Rectorate of the University of Seville. Listed as a National Monument, it is open to the public and features remarkable architecture, including its Baroque main portal and the surrounding moat.
