About

  • English
    • The Royal Monastery of San Clemente, located in the San Lorenzo neighborhood near the Guadalquivir River, is one of the oldest and most important in Seville. It was founded in 1248 by King Ferdinand III the Saint on the feast of Saint Clement, hence its name. This monastery of the female Cistercian Order played a crucial role in the city's history, serving as a royal pantheon for several members of Castilian royalty and hosting high-ranking ladies.

Architecturally, the complex is a heterogeneous testimony to past centuries, with major additions in the 16th and 17th centuries. It preserves important works of art such as its spectacular altarpiece. Although it is a cloistered convent, it is famous for the artisanal pastries and exquisite jams that the nuns continue to make and sell, thus perpetuating a delicious Sevillian tradition.
