Directions Monumento a Juan Belmonte - The icon of modern bullfighting in Seville

About

  • English
    • The Monumento a Juan Belmonte pays homage to one of the most famous and revolutionary bullfighters of Seville, nicknamed "El Pasmo de Triana" (the astonishment of Triana).

Although born in the Macarena district, Belmonte forged his legend in the working-class neighborhood of Triana, hence his nickname. The bronze sculpture, created by Venancio Blanco and inaugurated in 1972, stands proudly in the Plaza del Altozano, a symbolic location right next to the Triana Bridge. Its position is strategic as it faces the river and, beyond, the Real Maestranza, Seville's bullring, thus highlighting the bullfighter's deep connection with bullfighting and his city. The work, in its composition and style, stands out from the 19th-century Sevillian realist sculptural tradition, offering an original tribute to this icon of Andalusian culture.
