Directions Plaza Nueva - Beating heart of Seville

About

  • English
    • Seville's Plaza Nueva, located in the heart of the city's historic center, is a major public square that evolved from a former marshland on the Guadalquivir River to become a vibrant commercial and civic center.

Founded in the 19th century, it replaced the old Franciscan convent of San Francisco, of which only the Capilla de San Onofre remains. Its name, "new," contrasts with its turbulent history, as it has had several names over the course of political changes.

The square is dominated by the Seville City Hall, whose neoclassical façade overlooks the square. In the center, an equestrian statue of King Ferdinand III of Castile, who conquered Seville in 1248, pays tribute to his historical role.

Today, Plaza Nueva is a lively meeting place for Sevillians and tourists, hosting various events, fairs and festivals, as well as being an ideal starting point for exploring the main shopping streets and nearby monuments.
