Directions Mariners' Chapel - The icon of the sailors of Seville

About

  • English
    • The Chapel of the Sailors is a spiritual pillar of the Triana district of Seville. Although it is less imposing than other Sevillian churches, its importance lies in its role as the headquarters of the Hermandad de la Esperanza de Triana, one of the city's most venerated penitential brotherhoods. It is here that the images of the Santísimo Cristo de las Tres Caídas and, above all, of the very popular Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza are venerated, whose procession in the early hours of Good Friday (the Madrugá) attracts thousands of devotees.

Originally built in 1759, the chapel has had a turbulent history: it was deconsecrated, used as a warehouse, then as an Anglican church and even as a theater following the unrest of the 19th century. Recovered and restored, it now embodies the intense popular devotion of Triana. Its presence on Calle Pureza makes it an essential landmark for understanding the religious soul and fervent traditions of this historic neighborhood.
