About

  • English
    • Seville Cathedral, with its full name Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See (Catedral de Santa María de la Sede), is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Seville. It is one of the largest and most impressive religious buildings in the world.

The building was constructed in the early 15th century (from 1401 to 1506) on the site of the city's former Almohad Great Mosque, after the Christian reconquest. The cathedral was erected with the aim of demonstrating the city's recently acquired power and wealth. It is a remarkable example of the Gothic style with influences of Mudejar art in some of its elements, notably the famous bell tower, the Giralda.

The cathedral is also the burial place of several important figures, the most famous of whom is Christopher Columbus. His monumental tomb, supported by four heralds, is one of the cathedral's major attractions. Due to its historical significance and architectural richness, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
