About

  • English
    • The General Archive of the Indies (Archivo General de Indias) in Seville, Spain, is one of the most important repositories of historical documents in the world. It houses a colossal collection of documents illustrating the history of the Spanish Empire in the Americas and the Philippines. Created in 1785 by King Charles III, this archive was designed to centralize all documents relating to the Spanish colonies, thus facilitating the writing of a history of the Americas.

Housed in the magnificent Casa Lonja de Mercaderes (Old Merchants' Exchange) in Seville, a Renaissance-style building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the archive contains approximately 43,000 bundles and 80 million pages of documents. It contains maps, logs, and decrees that provide direct evidence of the life, exploration, and administration of the overseas territories.
