Directions Église de San Hermenegildo - In the footsteps of the Visigoth martyr

About

  • English
    • The Iglesia de San Hermenegildo (Church of Saint Hermenegild) is a religious building in Seville whose historical importance is closely linked to the ancient fortifications of the city.

Located on the current Ronda de Capuchinos, it is famous for being attached to the Puerta de Córdoba, one of the few remaining original gates of the 12th-century Almohad walls. The church itself owes its prestige to this integration with the city gate, which was converted into a chapel for the church. Its name honors Saint Hermenegild, a 6th-century Visigoth prince, martyred for his conversion from the Arian current to Catholicism. Although it has suffered periods of decline, particularly after being hit by an earthquake, it is today an emblematic structure where Baroque religious architecture stands alongside the monumental remains of the old Moorish wall.
