Les Colonnes romaines de la calle Mármoles Imperial remains in Seville

The Roman Columns of Calle Mármoles are the most authentic remains of Seville's Roman past (Hispalis). These three monumental shafts of Egyptian granite date from the 1st or 2nd century AD and are preserved at their original level, several meters below the current street. They are believed to have formed part of the portico of a large Roman temple. They are famous because they represent the fate of six columns discovered there: while three remained here, two others were moved in 1574 to adorn the entrance to the Alameda de Hércules, where they support the statues of Hercules and Julius Caesar. It is a direct, if discreet, witness to the monumentality of the city during the imperial era.
