Directions El Nacimiento del Hombre Nuevo - Monumental tribute to Christopher Columbus

About

  • English
    • The " Huevo de Colón " (Columbus' Egg) is the popular nickname for a monumental sculpture located in the San Jerónimo Park, north of Seville. Its official name is "Nacimiento de un Hombre Nuevo" (The Birth of a New Man). This colossal work was donated by Moscow on the occasion of the 1992 World Expo. It is the largest bronze sculpture in Spain, reaching almost 45 meters in height and weighing 476 tons.

The work represents an allegory of Christopher Columbus's voyage : an imposing statue of the Admiral, holding a map, is partially enveloped by an ovoid structure. This "eggshell" is formed by the sails and rigging of the three caravels (the Santa María, the Pinta, and the Niña), and symbolizes the famous anecdote of Columbus's egg, in which the explorer proved that something considered impossible becomes easy once the trick is found.
