Directions Convento de Santa Inés de Sevilla - Vibrant Gothic heritage

About

  • English
    • The Convento de Santa Inés is a Franciscan Poor Clare monastery located in the heart of Seville, famous not only for its artistic heritage, but also for its connection with literature and a poignant historical legend.

Founded in the late 14th century by Doña María Coronel, this convent is steeped in dramatic history. Legend has it that Doña María took refuge here to escape the advances of King Peter I of Castile (the Cruel), who had already executed her husband. To make herself unapproachable, she allegedly disfigured her face by pouring boiling oil from a pan in the convent kitchen. Her body, which is said to have remained incorrupt, is preserved in the church choir and is traditionally exposed for veneration on December 2.
