Directions Church of the Annunciation - Pantheon of Illustrious Sevillians

About

  • English
    • The Church of the Annunciation is an architectural and historical treasure of Seville, often overlooked by visitors, but of major importance. It is one of the finest examples of the Mannerist and Baroque styles in Andalusia.

Its sober façade contrasts with the richness of its interior. The church is particularly renowned for its pantheon of illustrious Sevillians, the most important in the city after the cathedral, housing in particular the tomb of the poet and playwright Juan de Mal Lara.

After the expulsion of the Jesuits in the 18th century, the building served as the headquarters of the University of Seville and the church became the university chapel.
