Directions Pilate's House - The Mudejar and Renaissance jewel of Seville

About

  • English
    • The Casa de Pilatos is a magnificent aristocratic palace located in the historic center of Seville. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it is considered the perfect prototype of the Andalusian palace. The building is notable for its harmonious blend of architectural styles, mainly Mudejar (characterized by Moorish influences), Gothic, and Renaissance. It was declared a National Monument in 1931.

The palace takes its name from a tradition that says its plan is a replica of Pontius Pilate's house in Jerusalem. The interior is organized around a large main patio, decorated with faience tiles (azulejos), Roman statues, and a fountain. There are also sumptuous gardens and salons richly decorated with frescoes and coffered ceilings. The Casa de Pilatos is still owned by the Ducal House of Medinaceli and has served as a set for several film productions, including "Lawrence of Arabia."
